Get ready for a unique chance to dive deep into traditional American old time fiddle music! In this course for beginner and intermediate fiddlers, we’ll be learning a number of fun, hypnotic, and beautiful fiddle tunes. We’ll be focusing on traditional fiddling from the southern Appalachian mountains, whose roots lie in African, European, and Native American musical traditions. Together, we’ll be learning tunes by ear and slowed down videos will be available of each tune to help with practice. Through these tunes, we’ll improve our ear training, technique, tone, rhythm, and style. This will be a great chance to geek out on fiddle music and history!

Prerequisites: Some experience on the violin/fiddle. A basic knowledge of how to hold the fiddle and some basic scales will be very helpful!

This class will be held from 8:00-9:15pm ET on Thursdays, Jan 9, 16, 23, 30, Feb 6

Please note: The class will be held at The Passim School of Music which is located at 26 Church St. Cambridge, MA. Classrooms are located on the third floor and, unfortunately, we do not have an elevator.

Limited to students 18 yrs of age or older; Pre-sales are highly encouraged! Online sales end 2 hours before the class begins. 4 students are required for this class to meet. If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, you will be notified and receive a full refund.

Benjamin Wetherbee

Benjamin Wetherbee is an Old Time fiddler from Watertown, MA. He grew up immersed in traditional music through his mom, Ruth Rappaport, a guitar/piano player and singer, and his dad, Peter Wetherbee, a roots-rock guitar player and singer. He got his start learning violin in elementary school while his mom taught him the Old Time tunes he had grown up hearing at home. It wasn’t long before he became obsessed with playing Old Time fiddle music. In college, he studied traditional Irish music in Cork, Ireland with fiddler Connie O’Connell. His fiddling is inspired by traditional Appalachian music, northeastern Old Time music from Ithaca, Vermont, and Massachusetts, bluegrass, Cajun/Creole music, New England contra dance music, experimental music, and more.  He is also a singer/songwriter, guitar player, poet, and artist.
