School of Music Policies

Answers to frequently asked questions are located at the bottom of the page.

Minimum Required Enrollment Policy

The Passim School of Music reserves the right to cancel or postpone classes due to low enrollment. In most cases, we require at least four students to run a course. We will notify you about any cancellations with proper notice.

If your class is canceled, then we will offer you a full refund, credit towards another class in the future, or the opportunity to transfer to a different class, space permitting.

Prorate Pricing Policy

Unfortunately at this time we are unable to offer prorate prices if students are unable to make all five classes.

Tuition/Refund Policy

Payment for all workshops and courses must be made in full before the first class session. You may pay by check, credit card, or exact cash. Course payments are not pro-rated by the number of sessions attended by the students; thus, if you are only able to attend 4 of the 5 scheduled classes, you still must pay the entire course fee.

Class & Workshop Refunds

You may receive a full refund if you cancel your registration at least one week before the class begins. From that point until the class starts, you may receive a credit at the Passim School of Music. If you cancel your workshop registration, you may receive a full refund up to one week before the workshop. From that point until 24 hours before the workshop, you may receive a credit at the Passim School of Music. Cancellations less than 24 hours before the workshop will not be eligible for a credit or refund.

Makeup Policy

Makeups will only be held for classes postponed by holidays, instructor’s request, or extreme weather. We do not offer makeup dates for student absences from classes nor do we pro-rate tuition.
Students in private lessons are entitled to one makeup lesson per term, provided that they notify the instructor at least 24 hours in advance.

Inclement Weather Policy

If there is inclement weather on the night of your class, please check the Passim website or call 617.492.5300 for cancellation information. All classes will be held as scheduled unless the instructor is unable to be present. If your class is canceled, then we will notify you by phone and/or email by 3PM.

    FAQ

  1. How do I register for a class?

There are three ways to register for a class in the School of Music. You may do so by calling 617-492-5300 between 9AM and 5PM on weekdays. You are able to register for any class online, 24 hours a day, until noon on the first day of the class. If you’d like to register for a class in person, visit the Club Passim box office in advance. The box office opens one hour prior to the evening showtime.

  2. How much do classes cost?

All classes cost $165 for non-members and $155 for members. Private lessons are $180 for non-members and $170 for members. The class description will note any differences in costs.

  3. How long do classes last?

Most classes run for 5 weeks, meeting for 1 hour 15 minutes each week. The class description will note any differences in length.

  4. How do I know which class to sign up for?

You can find all of the courses offered here, as well as the course descriptions on the corresponding class page. If your question is not answered there, then please email the School of Music Coordinator (mariel@passim.org) with a quick overview of your skill level. They will advise you on the appropriate class level for you and may put you in touch with the instructor.

  5. What should I do if I have signed up for a class that is the wrong level for me?

If you think your class is the wrong level for you, please notify your teacher and the School of Music coordinator after the first class, and you may transfer to a different course or take a credit for the future. You may either send an email (rachel@passim.org) or call 617.492.5300.

  6. What should I do if something comes up, and I can’t attend most of the class sessions?

If the class is less than a week away, we do not offer refunds. If you notify the School before the second week of class, you may receive credit to take another class at the School of Music in the future. After the second week of classes, we are unable to offer credits. This policy exists to ensure that we have enough students to run classes once they have begun. A changing class roster makes it difficult for instructors to create lesson plans and run classes, so this policy encourages students to be committed to their classes. Please email the School or call 617.492.5300 if you have a question about this.

  7. May I register for a class once it has started?

Yes, you can as long as the class is not full. Please call 617.492.5300 to confirm that there are spots available. We do not prorate classes, so the class will still cost the full amount if you register after the first class.

  8. How do I know if class is meeting during a snowstorm?

If an instructor can get to class, the class will still meet. If the instructor is unable to make it to class due to poor weather, we will contact students by phone and/or email by 3PM on the day of the class.
You may also check the Passim website or call 617.492.5300 for cancellation information.

  9. What is the makeup policy for missed classes?

With group classes, we do not schedule makeups for student absences. However, your instructor may be able to email you some exercises or songs to practice and may be willing to meet with you for a few minutes before your next class. It is up to the instructor to determine whether he or she is able to do so.

Makeups for group classes and ensembles will only be made for classes postponed by holidays, instructor’s request, or extreme weather. If this is the case, we will add a session at the end of the term as a makeup date.

Private lesson students are entitled to one makeup date per term, provided that you notify the instructor at least 24 hours in advance of your scheduled lesson. You and your instructor will find a mutually acceptable makeup date by the end of the term. Private lessons are only 30 minutes long, so we ask that you arrive on time in order to get the most out of your lesson.

  10. Are scholarships available for School of Music classes?

Yes, please visit our scholarship page for more information about the scholarship opportunities. We typically offer partial scholarships to deserving individuals who demonstrate a dedication to the class and music and who are unable to afford the full financial burden of the class. Please do not register for a class online if you intend to apply for a scholarship. Jon can reserve a spot for you until you have completed the scholarship application to ensure that you get into the class.

  11. Does the School of Music sell gift cards that I can give to my friends?

Yes, you can purchase a gift card, of any amount, and that gift card may be used at the Passim School of Music or at Club Passim shows. Gift cards can be purchased online, at the Club Passim box office, or over the phone at 617.492.5300 on weekdays from 9AM until 5PM. The box office opens one hour prior to showtime and remains open throughout the show.
