Club Passim is intentionally closed tonight in observance of Juneteenth, a day dedicated to celebrating and uplifting Black voices.

Juneteenth marks the final emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, following the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863. It serves as a celebration of African American liberation, culture, and joy, while also representing a recommitment to the ongoing work toward equity in the U.S.

The Black community’s use of music as a means to heal, motivate, and connect despite the severe injustices they have faced laid the foundation for modern American folk music. Before folk music arose, there were spirituals and work songs. We recognize these critical musical influences on folk music and acknowledge how, throughout modern American history, much of that influence has been overlooked or erased.

At Passim, we strive to cultivate a vibrant and inclusive community of folk musicians and listeners. This includes acknowledging the roots of folk music and actively working to include all voices that have been silenced by systems of oppression. The Folk Collective at Passim empowers diverse folk music artists in Greater New England to leverage music as a tool for community impact and social change by providing them a platform to reach new audiences, hone their craft, and amplify their unique voices.

We recognize that there is still work to be done to enhance inclusivity in our community. Music is a powerful and transformative tool for healing and connection. Now more than ever, we at Club Passim are committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive space for storytelling that embraces everyone.
